What is a way you've combined a career in civil engineering with giving back to the community I want to be able to support myself, but also find it important to give back- perhaps start a non-profit. Has anyone followed this path??

Hi Charlie. As a civil engineer you could provide pro bono constructability reviews to a variety of projects at various points in the design, whether it is the rebuilding of properties lost due to unforeseen circumstances to help owners in need, or cities that are designing infrastructure projects which does not have a Construction Management team on board due to funding limitations. The only cost is your time and it is a valuable service that requires your special skills. Thank you for your kind hearted intention to help others with your education and talent.

Julia’s Answer

Hi Charlie,
There is a shortage of Civil engineers in the workforce right now, and having this degree (and eventually a PE license) will put you in a great position to make a difference with your skills. There are lots of chances to volunteer once you start your career. You could tutor students in math or science, or get involved with groups like Habitat for Humanity or Engineers Without Borders. You can also find all types rewarding volunteer opportunities in your city or state.
Best of luck!

Erin E.’s Answer

I’m a landscape architect, so I’m not sure there’s a direct connection between civil engineering and the nonprofit world. However, your nonprofit doesn’t necessarily need to align directly with your professional field. You could focus on related community issues — for example, providing assistance to flood victims, helping homeowners afford repairs for leaky basements, or offering pro bono stormwater management plans for low-income neighborhoods, parks, & playgrounds.

Karin’s Answer

Hi Charlie,

As a civil engineer, you will help build and maintain the infrastructure of the country. So, you are already on the path to make positive contributions to society.

If you want to give back more directly, you could volunteer your professional services to non-profit organizations. Have a look at organizations that are active in disaster relief and rebuilding efforts such as Engineers without Borders, Team Rubicon or the American Society of Civil Engineers Foundation. Habitat for Humanity is another option. Getting involved in such organizations while you are still in school would also give you much needed professional experience.

You could also work with schools and youth organizations to mentor youth on their path to become engineers or scientists.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
