That's a great choice! Just keep in mind that some schools might cut those programs first.

Hi, Sophia !

The experience of taking any Major during college is up to the student to experience it for themselves. No one can honestly say how your academic path or career will go. Thinking about negative aspects of a career or Major is not the best way to approach it. You will have ups and downs in general all throughout your life so it's just a matter of learning how to manage situations and that comes with social and personal growth. You will never choose a Major by trying to eliminate the good days or the bad days. There are no previews. That's just life and you have a unique one to live. No two academic paths or careers are alike. You either like and accept the Major and Career or not.

Now would be a good time to focus on learning more about Music Education to figure out if it is indeed a major for you. First look at the academic path which consists of obtaining a Bachelors Degree in Music Education, complete a State Approved Teacher Preparation Program during which you would student teach which is considered an Internship, then pass the Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations. In your state, these exams are on the Basic Skills Tests (reading, writing, math), the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities exam, and a Content Knowledge exam specific to music education, either Instrumental Classroom Music or Vocal Classroom Music for K-12. Then you apply for a Teaching License. You will have to continue your education on-going by attending workshops and conferences, such as those hosted by the Minnesota Music Educators Association.

If that all sounds good to you, then you may be a successful candidate to major in Music Education.

Something else to focus on now would also be what you will decide to teach: Music Theory, Singing Voice or teaching a musical instrument. These three niches are completely different and will provide you with experiences all their own. Another thing to establish is what level do you want to teach: K-12, or college for which you will probably have to obtain a Masters Degree to teach college. These are the useful aspects of these careers to focus on now to verify whether or not you want to do this career.

Always remember that someone else's experience could never be your experience and if you have a passion and drive and make the commitment, you can be a Music Teacher that really makes an impact and means a lot to the students.

Best wishes in all you do !

Charnelle’s Answer

Hello,

Music is essential to life so the fact you want to take a path down this road gives you great purpose. But there are downsides and plus sides in doing this. First, off there is plenty opportunity especially if your good a what ever your doing in this field which could be producing, writing, technical, singing, education and instrumental etc. But balancing out school work and life could be a little difficult but more than doable. You will be changing children’s life and building up future musicians. So best of luck, you got this.
