Hi Patrick,

You have many different options to study and become a cyber security specialist or engineer in Kenya. There are certificate courses, diploma courses, bachelor, masters and PhD degrees. You can attend university or a TVET or opt for an online program and earn industry certificates. What is "best" depends on your professional goals and also on your personal situation.

A bachelor degree in computer science or cybersecurity would give you a good broad foundation. Here are a few options:

University of Nairobi: Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (https://computerscience.uonbi.ac.ke/admission-content-type/bachelor-science-computer-science)

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology: Bachelor of Science in Electronic and Computer Engineering (https://www.jkuat.ac.ke/school/seeie/?page_id=17429)

Open University of Kenya: Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics (https://ouk.ac.ke/bachelor-science-cyber-security-and-digital-forensics)

KCA University School of Technology: Bachelor of Science in Information Security and Forensics
(https://sot.kcau.ac.ke/course/bachelor-of-science-in-information-security-and-forensics)

In the cybersecurity field, hands-on experience and certifications are highly valued. Get into hands-on work by doing internships or volunteer work. There are also online platforms (e.g. TryHackMe, OverTheWire, Hack The Box), bootcamps and hackathons to practice your skills. You can earn cybersecurity certifications e.g. from Google, IBM, CompTIA, (ISC)², EC-Council, or GIAC in general security, ethical hacking, management, or cloud security.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Start with a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Cybersecurity to gain a strong base in programming, networking, operating systems, database management, security, and computer systems.

Get hands-on experience through labs, simulations, and exercises like capture-the-flag. Strengthen your skills with internships and volunteer work. Try platforms like TryHackMe, Hack The Box, OverTheWire, PicoCTF, and RangeForce for guided, practical exercises in penetration testing and network security. Keep up with new threats, malware analysis, cloud security, and network defense using resources like Cybrary, Coursera, Udemy, and the SANS Institute to boost your knowledge.

After your degree, aim for certifications like CompTIA Security+, CEH, CISSP, and OSCP to improve your credentials. By mixing education, practical experience, and certifications, and staying curious and eager to learn, you can build a successful and exciting career in cybersecurity.
