In the accounting field, how often do accountants collaborate with others? Is it more independent or less independent?

I'm currently in high school and have taken accounting classes. I love to get my head down in a project and am wondering the kind of project flow that is available to accountants.

Hi Melina,

This is a great question! Similar to the other answers, this largely depends on the organization and the type of role that you have. At a large company, where clients might be high profile, Fortune 1000 companies, you will be part of a large team, and while you will work independently, you will collaborate as you learn and have questions, and others will review your work and help show you where you can improve and fix mistakes (all normal part of starting a new job!).

Smaller companies might not require as much collaboration. You might work really independently, but you will likely report to someone who reviews your work or assigns you tasks, and hopefully you would have someone to go to with questions.

As you think about where you want to work, you can see how they are rated as a place to work, and that might give you a better sense as to if collaboration is possible, if it's expected, or if it is rare. Based on your preferences, that can help guide you to the right organization to apply and interview! Best of luck!!

Hi Melina,

Based on my experience in public accounting, teamwork is essential in accounting. You will likely collaborate with your team members internally to your firm to assist one another and prepare deliverables. As you gain more experience, you will have more opportunities to interact with the client and help resolve inquiries. That said, I think it ultimately depends on where work.

Heather’s Answer

H Melina, I work at an accounting firm. There are a lot of different types of roles within an accounting firm that may provide a different type of working environment depending on your interests. Many of these roles do involve a lot of teamwork - either from a learning perspective (sharing your knowledge or experiences with others) or working together with others to help support our clients and complete deliverables. There are some specialties within accounting that provide more opportunities to work independently. However much of what I have experienced while working here is working with teams. As you explore career interests, seek our opportunities to shadow individuals in different types of accounting roles to help you figure out what you are interested in the most.
