What is a piece of advice you would give to someone who wants to become an owner of a prosthetics and orthotics clinic and doesn't know how to get to that point?
I am a prosthetics and orthotics major and hope to some day own my own clinic or be a department head in a hospital, along with also having an impact on the costs covered of prosthetic and orthotic devices by health insurance companies. I am in my junior year of college and want to know if there is anything I should be doing to set myself up for success in the future.

It will be very important for you to deeply understand what patients, and the physicians that care for them, need and want from you. The process of obtaining the right orthosis/prosthetic for a patient can be annoyingly cumbersome. If you can work with all of those involved to understand how to make the ordering, producing, and acquisition of these as easy as possible, you will reduce your costs while delighting your customers - a winning business strategy.
You will need to always be looking at what new devices and technologies are about to come to market, so you can be an early adopter. Because costs can be so high, and insurance companies quite stingy, you will also need to consider how to be creative to meet the patients' needs in less expensive ways.

If you're a certified orthotist and prosthetist dreaming of owning your clinic, here's an encouraging path to follow:
1. Get Educated and Certified: Start by completing an accredited master's degree program. After that, finish a 12- to 18-month residency and earn your certification from the American Board for Certification (ABC). This foundation will set you up for success.
2. Gain Practical Experience: Work in the field to build your skills and understand how clinics operate. Consider shadowing experienced professionals or focusing on a specialty that interests you. Every bit of experience will make you more confident and capable.
3. Prepare for Business Ownership: Connect with others in the industry and learn the basics of running a business, like finance and management. Plan to ensure financial stability as you start your clinic. Networking and preparation will help you overcome challenges and succeed.
Believe in your abilities and take these steps one at a time. Your dream clinic is within reach!
