Skylar, while I understand that you're looking more at Criminal Justice/Fornesics type position, if you enjoy working with children, you might want to contact your local State CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) or GAL (Guardiant At Litem) for Ohio, it would be (ohiocasa.org) or you can usually research it from the State's Judical Website. You can find where a local office on the website along with contact information usally. I would contact them and share with them your plans and your background, they might be able to help give some suggestions as it pertains to child advocacy/welfare as a career. I would also take a look about being a CASA volunteer, you'll learn about child advocy. You will also learn about the court process for children who are DSS/YFS custody, including writting reports, and representing your child/children in court along with the attorney assigned to the case. Simply put you would be the "eyes an ears" of the judge because your considered "independant" or non-vested party, since you purely are the voice for your child during court hearings. I was a CASA/GAL volunteer for 7 years and while at times I needed to have a thick skin, and sometimes voice my disagreement with the court, but overall you'll find it richly rewarding!
