Working on a political campaign is a great way to kickstart a career in political communications and being a commentator. I'll be honest: I'm not sure the world needs more commentators, but we can always use more people who have direct experience giving their thoughts about how to make a difference. Campaigns are fast-paced and exciting, giving you real-world experience in things like crafting messages, talking with voters, figuring out how to connect with different types of people. You’ll learn how to think on your feet, work under pressure, and deal with unexpected challenges—all skills that are super important if you want to work in politics or any kind of public relations. Plus, campaigns often have a team atmosphere, which teaches you how to collaborate and adapt as part of something bigger than yourself.

More than just the skills, working on a campaign is all about the connections you’ll make. You’ll meet people from all kinds of backgrounds—neighborhood leaders, political officials, media folks, and other up-and-coming professionals—and those relationships could open doors for you down the road. Beyond that, you’ll get a front-row seat to see how public opinion, messaging, and policies are shaped and influence each other. It’s a huge learning experience that will give you the confidence and credibility to take your next steps, whether you continue in politics, advocacy, or another related field.

What an interesting question!

And I think you are starting in the correct place, Political Science major, I would hope, concentrate on American government and politics. Learn how the government operates and what is currently happening with governance, not only nationally, but state and local government and politics as well.

Also, in preparation, I would take part in some local political activities. And activities on your campus.

And, of course, follow the news, and commentary, especially news that's in print.

Keep a journal, and start writing down your thoughts and interpretation of what you have observed.

And then begin to write your own commentary, share it with others, and get their opinion.

And you're on your way.
