What can I do to ensure my success during college?

As a person who's never had a true job and enjoys doing school sports, what can I do to possibly manage college and a job? Are there clubs, organizations, or groups created during college that guide you or prepare you to succeed after and during college? What have been the most common habits students have done to regulate distractions? Are they any similar to the high school habits they've had?

That is a thoughtful and comprehensive question, and the very act of planning ahead shows you are already setting yourself up for success in college; that proactive mindset is a huge advantage. To ensure success while managing your academics, potential work, and maybe even college sports, the most crucial step is to develop a highly detailed and non-negotiable time management system where you block out all fixed commitments first—classes, practice, and any potential work hours—and then intentionally schedule dedicated time slots for studying and essential rest, which will be much more effective than relying on high school habits that might have had more buffer time. Regarding a job, look for flexible, on-campus positions like library desk attendant or tutoring, as these usually understand a student's schedule and may even allow for studying during downtime. Absolutely look for clubs and organizations, because most universities have dedicated career services groups, academic success centers, and student-run professional organizations specific to your major that actively offer mentoring, workshops on success skills, and networking to prepare you both during and after college. Finally, to regulate distractions, the most common and effective habit students adopt is the time blocking technique, where you use 25 or 50-minute focused work periods followed by short breaks, and critically, you must move your phone out of sight during those focused blocks, as distractions will be much more powerful than they were in high school. Embrace the challenge of learning how to manage this new level of responsibility, because you have the drive and commitment to make it work. Good luck with your transition and all your future goals!

Being organized will go a long way in your success in college. If you play sports, you know that your practice schedule is very important to you getting better and staying consistent. It is no different in college. If you block off time during the week and stick to it, you will be in good shape.

There should be organizations in club you can join. Some of those may just be for fun while others may include study groups and support for your educational journey. I would recommend trying to do at least one of each.
