If you’re just starting out, going into a firm or company as a legal assistant can be a great way to learn the area. To be a paralegal, most firms will expect you to have paralegal certification (you’ll need to pass the paralegal competency exam). Some paralegals I know studied the paralegal area specially and received an Associate or Bachelor degree in the field, but not all do. Some employers offer programs to help pay for ongoing eduction, so consider that benefit when applying to roles. It can be a great way to get the paralegal education and certificate while working as a legal assistant.
The best paralegals I’ve worked with are organized (some have Project Management expertise), collaborative, creative, and great at spotting gaps and problem areas. They’re key members of the team and also need strong people skills and communication abilities.

Requirements can vary depending on where you are, so it's important to do your research and get good at it. Research will be one of your most valuable skills in the legal support field. Remember, as a clerk, legal secretary, or paralegal, you are part of a team supporting attorneys. Everyone has a unique role, but teamwork is key to success. Sometimes, personalities may clash, but resolving these issues will help you succeed.
Being organized is crucial because attorneys often handle many cases at once and will rely on your organizational skills. Mistakes happen, but being accountable and learning from them will help you build trust in your law office. Stay open to learning and embrace change, as the legal industry is always evolving.
