what should I expect going into college for Youth Ministry and how should I prepare before college?

I am currently a senior in high school. I am a devote christian I have believed in him for a long time and I want to know how I can get better as a christian before I go into this field and how I know this is the field to me? I feel called to it but I do not know if it's the path I should go towards? I have been a believer for most of my life but recently got called into this path. I have been accepted into a college and I want to be prepared for it before I go there.

Hi Grace,

I love that you are a dedicated Christian and want to help young people know the Lord better. There certainly is a need for more youth ministers.

I have never worked in full-time ministry, but we all have at least one calling from God. Each of us needs to be faithful to the Lord.

You asked the question: “How can I get better as a Christian?”

In my experience, we need God to help us become more faithful. Here is a sermon by the late pastor Chuck Smith titled: “The Principle of Victory, from Exodus 23:27-30”. In this 34-minute sermon, Chuck talks about Christian growth. I found it helpful. I hope you will also.

You asked the question: “How can I know that this (youth ministry) is the field for me?”

Here is a wonderful course that I took from Dr. Angie Ward at ARTOS Academy:

This is a free course, and she addresses the question of how to confirm that your calling is from God.

There are a lot of different kinds of youth ministries. Some ministries focus on music, some are sports-oriented, and some are service-oriented, to name a few.

A good plan to prepare for youth ministry is to prepare for elementary, middle school, or high school teaching (depending on the age levels you want to minister to).

It is also good to talk to the pastor of your Church to get advice from them about preparing yourself for ministry. People who are already in youth ministry are another good source for advice.

The advice you get from these people will help you to chart your course in college.

I hope that you will find exactly your specific calling from the Lord, and that you will flourish in that calling.

I give you my Best Wishes for you and for your career.
