Hi, what is some career advice for an incoming architecture undergraduate student? #fall25

Are there any expectation I should, have anything I should be ready for? I've heard critiques and projects can be stressful, how can I work through it? What do careers look like for students after college? #fall25

Architecture programs can differ greatly depending on the school. It's a good idea to choose a program that starts you with architecture-specific classes in your first year. This approach helps you dive into studio and design courses early on, allowing you to see if you're truly passionate about design. In my program, about half of the students changed majors after the first year, but they still had time to finish a four-year degree without falling behind.

A key skill any program should teach is creative problem-solving and the ability to clearly explain your design process. Design is subjective, so not everyone will agree with your ideas. However, being able to defend and articulate your designs is crucial, as you will need to communicate effectively with clients who have their own ideas but rely on your expertise.

If you choose to study architecture, summer internships are vital for gaining real-world experience. The architecture field is broad, with opportunities in healthcare, workplace design, interiors, hospitality, multi-family housing, and more. Some of my colleagues have ventured into construction, project management, animation, real estate, and planning.

Good luck!

Well, I am not specifically in this field, I would encourage you to find a mentor who you can utilize for support. Early in my career, I found someone who is willing to answer questions and occasionally just meet for coffee. Being able to pull from that experience had a huge positive impact on my career. The college you go to should have an alumni association, which may just offer mentorship in this regard.
