Hello, Arna !
I would be happy to advise you about what you may be thinking about as a future career.
You have mentioned two different careers, one in the medical field and one in the beauty industry. You have two career options for this that you can explore further and choose one that suits what you would like to do. One career is to become a Dermatologist and the other career is to become an Esthetician.
Becoming a Dermatologist, in your state of New York, takes11 to 13 years of education and training after high school. You start with obtaining a Bachelors Degree in a life science and then go to Medical School and have a a three-year dermatology residency. The final step is passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 3 exam and obtaining a New York State medical license to practice. You would have patients that are ill or injured. This would be health and medically focused on various things such as skin cancers, infections, inflammatory and autoimmune skin diseases, hair loss and nail disorders, including infections, tumors, and warts, allergic and nonallergic skin disorders, skin manifestations of systemic diseases, such as those related to autoimmune, gastrointestinal, or rheumatological conditions, acne scarring, pigmentation disorders, and skin aging, traumatic injuries such as burns, and environmental damage from sun exposure, pollution, or occupational hazards, moles, skin tags, and keloids, and chronic skin conditions. The approach for this career is medical and not beauty.
If you really want more of a beauty focused career, your other option would be to become an Esthetician. In your state of New York, it takes 5 to 8 months and you put in 600 hours of time working on customers during your education. When you finish your Esthetician Program, you apply to take the State exam for your License to practice. The entire process, from enrollment to licensure, can take approximately 6 to 9 months, including the time needed to prepare for and pass the exams.
As an Esthetician, the duties you can do would be skin analysis and assessments, facials, including deep cleansing, steaming, exfoliation, mask application, and moisturizing, hair removal services such as waxing, threading, tweezing, and laser hair removal (with proper certification), body scrubs, wraps, peels, and microdermabrasion, remove blackheads, whiteheads, and other impurities from the skin, makeup application, recommend and sell skincare products, maintain treatment rooms and sanitize tools and equipment, scheduling, consultations and documentation, educate clients on at-home skincare routines, chemical peels, micro needling, or platelet rich plasma facials with additional certification. Your school may also teach manicures and pedicures.
So, it's between the Medical Field (Dermatologist) or the Beauty Industry (Esthetician). This is what you can decide between. Think of how long you may want to attend school and what position, Doctor or Esthetician fits in with the lifestyle you want. Also consider the cost of the education.
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best going forward exploring more about these two careers !
