Internet searches suggest New York, Maryland, New Jersey due to increased salaries, but having said that my past experience growing up in Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex has had positive anecdotes from local teachers, not to mention the much more affordable cost of living. I think where you have a support system should also play a large factor, even though not a dollar element, it can greatly effect your future trajectory

Olivia, the best place to work in the country as a teacher is a place that offers you the type of lifestyle, climate, cost of living and environment that interests you. Teachers are in great demand and great teachers are truly treasured and appreciated by the children lucky enough to be in their class.
You need to decide what is important to you and then look for a job. If you love winter weather and outdoor sports then someplace in the North would be a good place to explore. Are you a warm weather person then think Southern states. Are you a city gal or do you prefer being in a more rural area? What about friends and family? Do you want to be close to them or are you ready to strike out and follow your adventurous streak? Make a list and start to figure out what intrigues you. Once you have that figured out you can begin to search for job opportunities.
Until you have an advanced degree (masters) teacher salaries are on the low side $50,000 or less for first year Bachelors degrees. If you choose to live and work in a more rural place the cost of living will be much more teacher friendly. Some districts offer signing bonuses to entice you to work for them. That could be anywhere from $5,000-$20,000 a one year bonus.
Be sure that you familiarize yourself with the state and district you are interested in. These days the field of education is pretty topsy turvy with lots of new administrative bureaucracy and policies that may or may not align with your own teaching philosophy.
I hope I have given you some things to think about. Good luck. I have so much respect and admiration for those that want to teach. Our world needs dedicated, motivated educators...just like you!
