Hello, Dylan !
I would be happy to advise you about your dream career !
Your first step after High School is to enroll in college for your Bachelors Degree in Sports Management (most preferred) or Business Administration. To be competitive for General Sports Management positions, you should obtain your Masters Degree, which would actually be helpful in many ways.
The next step is to gain experience through internships, entry level roles in team operations, scouting, analytics, or player development, and build a strong professional network within the industry. This is a career that requires heavy networking if you want to be known to the people who hire. Keep in mind that Texas universities are actively hiring General Managers.
General Managers duties have expanded due to Name, Image, and Likeness needs of the players. That means that you would now be the one that negotiates financial opportunities for student athletes, making financial insights, so negotiation skills are critical.
You can start networking now. Attend a variety of all the games you can and mingle afterwards with the managers and players. Definitely connect with REV Sports Management for opportunities to get experience volunteering or working with venue operations and event management, which can serve as a platform for building industry contacts and connections - which you'll need. Mansfield Stadium can offer experience in operations as well as Name, Image, Likeness activations, fostering collaboration with venue departments. This career takes being active just like the field I am in, you have to get the experience at first and be memorable.
During your high school years, do a variety of sports, from golf to hockey to equestrian (if you're up to it) and archery. Get a taste of as many sports as you can so you will have insight and work more understandably with the athletes.
Most of all - never give up. You can do this ! Don't let anything negative deter you from your dream job. Stay positive and enthusiastic and you'll be on the right track !
I hope this helps ad I wish you all the best for this exciting journey towards your awesome career !
