What are the benefits to taking Clep exams?

I am considering taking some of these exams but do not know if it is truly worth it, or if my college will accept them. Where do I find some of this information?

Hi Hallie, if you’re thinking about CLEP exams, there can be real benefits but it totally depends on your college’s policies.

# Why people take CLEP exams:
1. You can earn college credit without taking a full semester-long class.
2. It can save both time and money if your school accepts the credit.
3. You get to skip intro-level classes and move to more advanced or major-related ones sooner.

# Where to check if it’s worth it for you:
Every college decides on its own what CLEP exams they accept.
You can:
1. Visit your college’s official website & look for “CLEP policy” or “credit by examination.”
2. Or email the registrar/admissions office and ask directly. They’ll tell you exactly which CLEPs count and how many credits they’re worth.

Since you’re interested in pre-law, it might help you clear some general education requirements early but again, only if your college allows it.

You got this!

TRAVIS’s Answer

Great question! Few people know about the CLEP tests. I have earned several credits via CLEP tests. It would be useful to take if the course you are needing credit in is something you wont need to build on with a major in a Bachelor program. Most colleges have basic courses that are required that are not associated with your major. You can get a limited amount of credits via CLEP. Ask the colleges you are interested in or do a web search to find out if they accept it (Most do). You will save time and money with CLEP exams. But it doesnt earn you a GPA, just credit. Which is all you need. Some tests only require 50% passing to get credit with CLEP. If you take a practice CLEP and score at least 60%, go sign up and take the real test. Good luck, you will do well.
