What is college really for when I see all these young, successful, high school drop-out, business owners who are very successful and never went to college?

I see many millionaires who are very young and never went to college. I want to know how they got their and if college is really the right path. Or is college just a safe path that will give me a stable job?

It's because you never hear about the failures. Say 1,000 drop out of college and start their own gig, but only 2 really make it big, billionaire big - and that's a generous statistic. The other 998 don't make it onto the cover of Forbes 30 under 30. In fact, you may never hear from them again, because people don't talk about their failures a lot.
Yes, you can take a gamble that you will be part of that 1% who set up the next billion dollar company. And while I trust that a good percentage of college drop-outs are brilliant, life doesn't always work out this way and much more than brilliance, it takes being in the right place at the right time, with the right connections. So you have to have the potential, but you also have to have luck on your side.
Plus, you still see these billionaires sending their kids to the best colleges - if a college education really wasn't all that valuable, they wouldn't waste their kids time on it.
So all in all, without knowing your precise situation, it would be a poor gamble to drop out of college just because some successful people did so. Correlation does not mean causation.

Hi Aidan - a good idea is to take an inventory of what you want to do and what you are willing to commit. Doctors, lawyers -they obviously need college. But if you aren't sure, try community college for a couple years or take a good look into trade schools. There is nothing wrong with not going to college, just make sure you are realistic in your expectations for your life and career whatever path you choose. And if you aren't sure - community college is a good way to explore.

Hi Aidan,

Follow your passion, as that's the best way to find joy in your work. Everyone has their own path, so focus on what excites you.

College is a wonderful place that can equip you with skills you’ll need, like how to communicate and work with others. If something doesn’t feel right, you can always explore other options. Just remember to give things a fair chance, as success takes time and effort.

Wishing you the best in your journey!

Hello Aidan,

Growing up my parents always said that my education and learning in life is one thing no one can take away from me and it will always help me get back up on my feet when life gets hard.

Having said that, college education is the next step in the human stage of development. Its a place where you may find the right mentor to guide you through life, the friends and connections that will find and be the source of your opportunities in life.
College is also an introduction of subjects and topics that may generate your interest towards a successful career.

It will help you grow as an individual. Just remember college is not the end of education, life now a days is such that we have to be always learning.

Keep growing. keep Learning!

I wish you tremendous success in life.
