Dear Braylen,
This is an excellent question.
Excellence ensures that you not only shine in your current role but also become a candidate for promotion. To be able to excel, you need to be competent. Relevant knowledge provides the foundation for your competence. Skills allow you to make good use of knowledge and other resources to deliver results.
Work needs to be planned, scheduled and executed. Sometimes things go wrong. We need to be able to identify and resolve such challenges.
We often need input from others in order to complete our own tasks on time in full and to the required standard. We also need to support others. It's therefore important that we learn to work with others.
In the course of our work, we generate data. Such information needs to be collated, organized, analyzed and critically evaluated so we can see trends, deviations and correlations that in turn feed into our decision making.
Communication plays a critical role in every endeavor we engage in. This means we must communicate effectively.
Our ability to organize ourselves and our activities is another important skill that is required for success.
Using the above skills optimally can help us produce superior performance and therefore make us stand out.
Though essential, knowledge and skills do not make us fully competent. We need to exhibit important personal qualities that enhance our effectiveness and efficiency in utilizing skills and knowledge. Such qualities include curiosity, positive mindset, commitment, perseverance, passion, diligence, objectivity etc.
To truly stand out, our effort needs to be sincere and we need to be our very best selves each day.

The most powerful thing about starting a career in engineering is that it not only teaches you how to solve real-world problems but also shows you how to turn your theoretical knowledge into practical experience and make meaningful contributions with your full potential. To succeed, it’s important to develop both technical and soft skills, building a solid foundation of knowledge complemented by hands-on projects, internships, or volunteer experiences. Showcasing your work on platforms like GitHub and sharing it on LinkedIn helps demonstrate your skills, while networking through LinkedIn, GitHub, and communities like Stack Exchange opens doors to mentorship, collaboration, and opportunities. Being curious and staying constantly updated on new technologies, alongside developing adaptability, attention to detail, collaboration, and critical thinking, makes you versatile and ready to take on exciting, cutting-edge projects. Engineering turns curiosity and creativity into a career where you can keep learning, building, and making a real impact.

Brian’s Answer

Engineering is a vast and exciting field with many interesting areas like mechanical, civil, aeronautical, and electrical. I've always found civil engineering fascinating, with its focus on designing cities and infrastructure. If I had the chance, I would have loved to work with the Army Corps of Engineers.

When starting a career in engineering, the most important thing is to ensure you have a job that is both valuable and exciting. Even if you've chosen your field, it's essential to be open to new experiences. I began my career in telecommunications after studying electrical engineering. I realized that the skills I learned in college were just the beginning.

The key to success in engineering is being flexible and ready to adapt. This adaptability was crucial for me and helped me secure a rewarding career. Always stay updated with new technologies, keep learning, and don't hesitate to take risks. Remember, progress often requires stepping out of your comfort zone.
