How much fulfillment are you supposed to receive from your job?

One of the ways I find motivation is by doing things that I am interested in, but I am not really finding jobs that excite me- is this normal? Is it necessary for me to find a job that motivates me by being interesting to me, or do I just need to be happy with something that I don't really think I am pleased to pursue. Is it normal to find fulfillment (at least in some quantities) from your career?

It is completely normal to feel a bit lost when you aren't finding jobs that immediately spark a deep passion or excitement, and you definitely aren't alone in wondering how much of your identity should be tied to your work. While society often tells us we need to find our one true calling, the reality for many people is that fulfillment comes in different shapes, sometimes it’s the work itself, but other times it’s the people you work with, the security the paycheck provides for your hobbies, or the way your role helps others. It’s okay if a job is just a part of your life rather than the whole thing, though it’s certainly helpful to find something that aligns with your values or at least doesn't drain your spirit. You don't necessarily need to be head over heels for every task you do, but seeking out a career that offers at least some level of interest or a sense of accomplishment is a great goal to have. Don't feel like you're failing if you aren't waking up every morning filled with pure joy for your career path, because finding that balance is a journey that takes time and often involves a bit of trial and error. You're asking all the right questions, and I have no doubt you'll find a path that feels meaningful and sustainable for you. Good luck.

In these trying times it is never a good idea to be too picky. Careers whom match your passions are wonderful however, sometimes, opportunities comes in spaces and/or places you never even think of as long as you have an open mind.
If there's a career out there you feel your truly suited for then go for it with no regrets however rewards are not always guaranteed. If a job you have now is keeping you afloat and stable the smart choice is to to stick with it until you feel financial secure risk does not always get rewarded.

Lillian,

Some of the most fulfilling jobs don't pay enough to live on. I saw this when working at the workforce office, helping jobseekers. The work was very rewarding. But, the only reason I could afford to work there was because I had retired from one job and had a pension coming in. Others had spouses with well-paying jobs, or, lived with Mom and Dad. Others, sadly, ended up filing bankruptcy.

Any job can be a stepping stone to another. Take what you can from it, learn, grow, and move on. Take night classes. Always work on self-improvement. Also, don't overlook volunteering. A strong sense of fulfillment comes from scouting, coaching, mentoring, nonprofit fundraising, etc. and, can lead to career opportunities.

Whatever you do, don't let the fact that you aren't crazy about your job color your attitude. Always treat it like a professional position. Show up on time, dress appropriately, don't gossip, etc. . . and don't trust anyone with your true feelings. Work friends can be fickle.

best of luck!
Kim
