Hello, Elyssa !
As with all careers, you will need training, education and experience before you would be at the level for auditions and working as a professional actress for pay. This career is a process and requires a lot of time, patience and willingness to be flexible.
Producers and directors feel that if someone has no or very little experience, they would have to spend time teaching when that's not what directors do. You also will need to be at a certain level for monologue auditions as well as cold readings and this comes with time and experience. Actresses do not get paid to "try" acting so your best bet will be to be involved in any theatre or video clubs/extracurriculars at your high school to break the ice in a safe and supportive environment.
If by your senior year in high school you feel that you want this career definitely, I would advise enrolling in college and majoring in Theatre with an emphasis on Acting. This will give you foundational awareness about the career and by the time you graduate college, you will know exactly how to do this career. If you jump into it without experience or substantial training, it's going to seem confusing and disappointing to you. Taking the right steps will make it real for you and develop your personal style as an Actress.
I advise connecting with the Young Actors Theatre program in Indianapolis to gain confidence, creativity, and discipline through character development, leadership, and performance. There is also the IRT Theatre Camps which provide summer programs for teens ages 8–15, including Intermediate Acting, Intermediate Musical Theatre, and Introduction to Stage Combat. Playdate Theatre runs a Virtual Drama Club open to high school students nationwide, including those in Indianapolis. Asante Art Institute offers programs for teens focused on storytelling, spoken word, acting, and content creation, with an emphasis on building confidence and community engagement through performance. You are fortunate that your city has rich opportunities for you to explore Acting. Do a search online for any film acting classes in your community, but theatre will give you a good basic training so that you can transition easily to film, video or television.
Remember, we all have to start some time. I started when I was 18 at college and that proved to be the best path for me personally. While I was in college, I had opportunities for experience and even was able to obtain paid work as an actress before even graduating. You will be around a lot of resources and opportunity in college and possibly even develop a friendship with a mentor.
Learning now when you are 15 is great and gives you a head start with getting experience. You can do it !
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
