I’m glad to learn about your interest in fashion design or photography. First, it is important to understand that fashion design is a broad field, and you need to identify the specific area you are considering. You are at an early stage where you still have the opportunity to discover more about yourself and your strengths. As you prepare to enter college, I recommend taking online courses in fashion design to familiarize yourself with the field. Begin by reading and learning as much as you can about fashion design or photography, as this insight will deepen your understanding and help you determine the exact aspect you would like to pursue, whether as a technical designer, apparel designer, or in another specialization.
Surround yourself with people who inspire you in the field of fashion design or photography, and remain grounded, focused, and open-minded, always willing to learn and grow within the industry. Regarding reputable schools for design, I recommend Otis College of Art and Design, Fashion Institute of Technology, Academy of Art University, Milano Fashion Institute, and IED Istituto Europeo di Design, among others. However, if tuition costs feel overwhelming and you prefer to study fashion design completely online, I would also recommend University of Fashion. You will learn from professionals who have taught at top fashion institutes such as the Fashion Institute of Technology and who are already experts in the field. This option is particularly suitable if your goal is to build skills for starting your own fashion business or career, since the certificate is primarily useful for job searches rather than further academic studies. If you are specifically interested in earning a formal degree, then attending one of these fashion schools would be the better option.

Here are two reputable art schools with both fashion and photography majors; Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Pratt Institute. I'm sure there are others but here are two to start with - as you are in 8th grade you have plenty of time to discover others on your own. Good luck!

Hi Phynix! Your name is really awesome! 8th grade can feel challenging, but remember, you have plenty of time in high school to explore your interests and think about your future career. It's a great idea to chat with your school counselors about what you enjoy. Be open about your passions when you meet with educational advisors in high school or college. This helps them guide you better.
If you're in Texas, the University of North Texas is fantastic for fashion and photography. I graduated from there in 2024 with a degree in photojournalism, and it was a great experience.
Keep exploring and sharing your interests with advisors. You're on the right path!
