Jessica’s Answer

Start by building a balanced college list, tracking deadlines, and completing applications through platforms like the Common Application or Coalition Application, making sure your transcript, test scores (if required), essays, and recommendation letters are submitted on time. To improve your chances for admission and scholarships, keep your grades strong, get involved in activities that show commitment and leadership, write a personal essay that feels authentic, and apply for multiple scholarships early using tools like Fastweb and Scholarships.com. Common problems include missing deadlines, submitting rushed essays, not applying for enough scholarships, and underestimating financial aid forms like the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which many students overlook but is essential for receiving aid.

Eric’s Answer

The best thing you can do is apply early. Learn about the requirements for each college or university system. You should definitely schedule a meeting with your school's college advisor to make a plan for applying before your senior year.

Eric recommends the following next steps:

Meet with your college advisor.
Visit a college during Spring Break.
Go to the CaliforniaColleges.edu site and review the requirements for applying for the California State and University systems.
