Hi Rachael,
There are so many options in the social work field, including working with families, schools, healthcare settings, nonprofits, or government agencies. You could look for an internship focused on child and family well-being or on supporting programs that help children and families stay safe and healthy, while pursuing your education. In my role, I focus on managing projects, and that work is connected to social services and community support indirectly rather than directly. It works for me because it is less emotionally taxing and a great way to contribute to social services and community support using my skill set.

Hi there Rachael, I’m glad to hear you’re considering making a contribution to the profession of social work:) As mentioned in the answer above there are many areas where you can work utilizing your skill set .
I have worked independently for 30+ years as a a private practitioner in psychotherapy . Being self employed has been challenging yet always rewarding and I’ve taken pride in providing mental health treatment in a clinical capacity to individuals, couples families and groups. Prior & inclusive to the establishment of my practice I have been employed with local Non profit agencies as consultant & worked for several years as a School Social Worker & adjunct Faculty Supervisor and Field Instructor for a graduate School of Social Services @ a local University.
Always a pleasure offer any further assistance and wishing you much success and happiness in your future:)

Social work is a very broad field, and professionals can specialize in many areas depending on their interests.
For example, some social workers focus on:
1) Child and family services (supporting children, orphans, or vulnerable families)
2) Healthcare social work (helping patients navigate illness, hospitals, and recovery)
3) School social work (supporting students emotionally and socially)
4) Community development (working with communities to improve education, health, or economic conditions)
5) Mental health services (counseling and psychological support)
Personally, I am deeply connected to community and humanitarian work, especially supporting vulnerable children and youth through education, mentorship, and social support programs. This type of social work focuses on long-term impact, helping people build a better future rather than only addressing immediate needs.
If you're considering social work, it’s important to explore which area aligns with your passion. The field is wide, and you can shape your path based on the kind of impact you want to make.
