There are many differences between police officers and sheriff deputies. Much has to do with their jurisdictions and what services they offer to the public.

Police Officers operate within a specific municipality, like a city or town region. They focus on local 911 calls, traffic enforcement, and criminal investigations within those particular city boundaries.

Sheriff’s Deputies have countywide authority. They primarily patrol "unincorporated" areas—parts of the county that aren't inside any city limits but can also assist local police or serve areas that lack their own police force.

More than 95% of sheriffs are elected officials, usually serving four-year terms. Police chiefs are typically appointed by city management or a police commission.

The office of the sheriff is often a constitutionally mandated position, while city police departments are created by local ordinance.

Sheriffs handle unique administrative and judicial tasks, such as transporting inmates, managing the county jail system, and serving court-ordered papers like eviction notices or warrants.

The Police are more specialized in urban crime prevention, community policing, and handling day-to-day public safety issues within city centers.

These are some of the basic differences between the two agencies.
