How can I become a electrician when I grow up?

As a current 7th grader at Crane Middle School preparing to enter the 8th grade, I have developed a strong interest in becoming an electrician. This career path is personally meaningful to me because I grew up assisting my father with electrical projects, where I gained hands on experience with the fundamentals. I have already learned how to strip wires, pull them through conduits, and properly connect them to switches. Because of this background, I am a quick learner and am happy to learn.

Layla’s Answer

I run a business in New York that hires electricians. We usually hire those who have finished a formal training or vocational program. To find similar programs near you, search online for "Electrical apprenticeship programs near me." Once you find some options, contact the admissions department of these organizations. Ask if you can speak with someone for an informational interview to learn more and ask specific questions about starting your journey.

An apprenticeship program is the way to go. There is likely one near you and if you look for the local Brotherhood of Electrical Works Union, you should be able to find out about what the requirements are for electrical works. Good luck, you will do well.
