It all depends on what your long-term goals are. I was a teacher with a masters degree. When I retired, I went to CIA to get a culinary certificate and immediately began working in fine dining. You should always have a backup plan. I would go the certificate route and get an associate or bachelor degree in a good field like AI or business management, which would advance a culinary background. Find your passion and go with it. Best of luck.

Colleges can be very helpful when it comes to learning how to cook. However, there’s a lot to be said for learning on the job. If you can find a restaurant that you think is really good, go there. Set up an informal interview with the Chef. Say it’s an informational interview. That way he’s not or she’s not beholden to necessarily hire you. Maybe you could even volunteer for a day prepping? If you haven’t worked in restaurants, I would strongly suggest you do before you consider going to school. I went to school and I worked in a restaurant. Both were very helpful. I also went to a very excellent local community college. That was basically free. I learned from a phenomenal chef who happened to be there. If you have a great attitude, are willing to keep your mouth closed, pay attention to detail, and watch and listen, you could do well.
