I want to pursue my career in Culinary arts, but my mom says that men should do something sustaining like Engineering, Medicine etc. How can i convince her.

I am from India and mothers here have a very traditional approach to life. I am not sure if she will ever allow me to pursue my dreams. Please give me a solid explanation to convince her. Thank you. #chef #masters #cooking #nutrition #cooking-and-baking #cooking-healthy-meals #gourmet-cooking

I'm not an expert in this area, however I do believe that very few females have the esteemed Michelin stars as this is typically a male dominated world of top chefs across Europe, so pursuing a career in India, where this may be the opposite may be true, can be difficult, but I believe in equality and that we should all follow our chosen paths regardless of whether typically that role has been dominated by one gender or another. I work within the IT Industry and encourage women everywhere to look at IT as not just being for techies, but a place where there are serious careers to be made within sales and support functions.

Good luck in your future career and happy cooking.

Have you had a honest, open conversation with your mother about what you want? My mom always wanted me to pursue medicine or law but I was never passionate about those fields. It took many conversations for her to understand what my dreams are and now, she's supportive even if I'm not doing exactly what she thinks is right.

Having an honest conversation is important, but what's even more important is showing her how much you love culinary arts. Cook for her, cook for other people, and try to demonstrate that it's not just a hobby, but a passion that you want to turn into a career. Our parents want the best for us, which is why they always push us in the direction of "sustaining" careers, but they sometimes forget that careers are sustained by a deep love for what you do.

Dear Harsh,
I first want to commend you for being clear about your passion and for taking a step to figure out how you can pursue it. Having grown up in India, I completely understand what you are facing and why she might feel that way. Top chefs in India like Sanjay Kapoor, Sanjay Thumma are men. Almost all popular restaurants have male chefs. With tourism and economy growing, culinary/hotel management has a good future in the coming years. and personally, I find it to be a very interesting path.
Hotel Management is offered in many good universities across the country and is a great career. Your mom might be worried about sustainability and if you can make money by being a chef. Show her how passionate you are and also do your research about these courses. Maybe find a local chef who is successful, shadow them so that you can also understand what happens every day. You can share all this with your mom to convince her. Good luck!
