What is your experience with the licensing or lifestyle / work-life transition process overseas? ?

I am the road to becoming a veterinarian at Tuskegee University, after my degrees I would like to practice outside of the US perhaps Singapore. I've grown up overseas, however I would like to get a feel for the work/life world in different countries including the US.

Dear Zoë, that a very good question. I can answer from a legal perspective (myself ) and a medical one (my daughter), and I suspect it’s going to be the same for veterinary practitioners.

You need to check whether your qualifications will transfer over to the country you want to practice in. In your case, from the US to possibly Singapore. Check with the licensing board in the new country. Will they recognize your degree? If so, what do you need to show them. If not, what do you need to do. Then, assuming you get your license to practice in the US, will they recognize your license. I would expect not, but it depends on the country.

In other words, you could be looking at re-qualifying.

You might also have to go through residency type training again — this is the case for doctors who go to the US from other countries.

Usually you can find out what the situation is on the website of the licensing board for the profession in the country you want to move to.

So, it might add some years to your training, but it is possible. Good luck!

(PS All of this assumes you can easily move to, say, Singapore, that you would have the necessary residency permissions etc… Those are a whole other thing.)
