How can a student enter into new fields and opportunities without prior experience?

This is a broad question, but the most notable examples I can think of with a “barrier to entry” include research, internships, and new career fields.

Henley’s Answer

Networking is essential. Knowing someone inside a company can really help you stand out. Even though it might seem harder these days, companies still appreciate referrals. If there's a company you want to join but no current openings fit you, try to connect with people who work there. Talk to them and learn about the company. Building these relationships can create more opportunities for you in the future, rather than just waiting for a job to become available.

Explore opportunities at your school. They often have partnerships or connections that can help you start your career. One of the toughest parts of today's job market is meeting the right people. Networking can connect you with those who can show your resume to the right person or give you a strong recommendation. Search for entry-level jobs in areas you like. By making connections and gaining experience, you'll learn skills that bring you closer to your goals. You can do it!

Hi Madison! It's a great idea to start growing your network in the areas you're interested in. Many professional groups welcome students and can help you connect with others. Joining LinkedIn is a good way to start creating your profile and expanding your network. As you meet people in your chosen fields, don't hesitate to ask them for advice.
