How do you negotiate your salary/benefits as a new music therapist ?

How do you negotiate salary in helping professions? I am a music therapy student and will be entering an unpaid internship. I am providing for myself and am concerned financially. After internship I want to make sure I get paid fairly for my work! My goal is to work with developmental disabilities and older adults. Thanks! #spring26

Hi Lila.

I hope you are having a good Weekend.

You pose a great question. I would suggest to you that you make sure the salary being offered (in any job position) should be comparable to new therapists across the departments e.g. Physical and Occupational therapies. You can also contact the heads of those departments in the facility you are looking at, or contact the HR departments, I would imagine to get a ball park figure.

Out side of that - ask at your College bc your instructors (who are probably also in the Field) would certainly have a better idea than me.

Good luck !!

MaryAnn recommends the following next steps:

Speak with other therapist departments at the same and other facilities that have music therapy in their health care
Speak with your instructors and Dept. Head at your College
Ask HR Dept. for comps of incoming therapist salary ranges
