What are the most effective strategies for a 25-year-old pursuing a social work degree to successfully balance academic responsibilities, a job, parenting, personal life, and financial obligations like bills ?

I’m 25 currently finishing up my first year of college. The first time I went to college right after high school I wasn’t mentally prepared, but this time around I’m in a better mental space but I have more responsibilities.

Kameron,

That's a tough one! I'd say to go to school only part-time, no more than 9 hours (and maybe only six!), and not take all the intensive courses during the same semester. It helps if your job has flexible hours and an understanding boss, but that's not always the case. It also helps if you have a team to help with childcare.

Try to eat and sleep right, and stay hydrated. You don't have the luxury of extra time for being sick!

Also, use whatever daily planner method works for you to stay ahead of the game. Do not fall behind in your classes, as it's really hard to catch up.

Anticipate a greater demand for your time in school when you get further along.

As to finances, it's really important to distinguish between "wants" and "needs." For example, a person needs reliable transportation, but "Wants" a sports car. Don't run up credit cards except for necessities. Check with the school's financial aid office to make sure you are taking advantage of any opportunities to fund your education.

These are the years that you look back on many years from now and ask, in all seriousness, "how on earth did I hold it all together?" But, you can, and, you will. Lots of people do! Stay focused on your goals!
