How many hours should I work while going to school FT my first year in NYC?
How many hours are manageable to work while going to school my freshman year? I am going to be in NYC and will be attending classes full time. I will be starting out living in the campus dorms. I don’t want to sacrifice my grades and at the same time I don’t want to have too much time on my hands. I want to stay busy and be productive (while earning money). What does everyone suggest? #Spring26 #NYC

If possible, you should try to work no more than 10 – 15hrs/wk. Course work will extend well beyond your class schedule, so you’ll need time to complete your assignments. On a whole – after you’ve secured your tuition fees and books – you may not have much need for additional money through the semester, especially if you live on campus. But, having grown up in NYC myself, I’m well aware how expensive even the simplest outing can be.

I’d recommend getting through your first semester to get an understanding of your new normal. I recently hired someone who immediately had to quit because school was too much. Based on this, I wouldn’t rehire them, so be mindful of overextending yourself and how that might reflect on you.
