What are the best strategies to separate work and social time in collage?
Especially when being a first year student who is trying to make friends and build new relationships.

Hi Wylan,
Thank you for your question.
At the beginning of college, you can try to build a structed schedule to block out fixed "work time" and dedicated "social time", treat "work time" as non-negotiable appointment , turn off non-essential notifications during work hours, which can help train your brain to focus during these hours and full unwind during social time.
Proactively communicate your boundaries, clear tell your schedule early to your friend, which not only help friend to arrange properly with potential conflict eliminated, but also obtain the respect and build healthy habits from the start. Friendly say "No" and suggest new timeslot will not hurt the relationship.
Look back and adjust. The first year for sure is about experimentation, so don't stress if you don't get split exactly right every week. Check in with yourself might be weekly, if you are burnt out from studying, plan a low-key hangout, if you are falling behind on work, adjust your schedule for the next few days..
General speaking, fully focus during working hours and fully enjoy when you stay with your friend. Best wishes and good luck
