Hi Mixtly,
This is a very real and important question, and I’m glad you’re thinking about it early. Yes, being a psychiatrist can be manageable with a family, but it depends on the kind of setup you choose. Psychiatry is actually one of the more flexible areas in medicine compared to many others. Some psychiatrists work in hospitals with longer and sometimes irregular hours, while others work in private practice or clinics where schedules can be more predictable, like a standard 9–5.
In terms of hours, many psychiatrists work around 40–60 hours a week, but this can vary. Early in your career, especially during medical school and residency, the hours can be quite demanding. That phase is the most intense and requires a lot of time and energy. However, once you’re fully trained, you often have more control over your schedule and can shape your work-life balance in a way that fits your personal goals, including family life.
The key thing to understand is that it’s not just about the job itself, but how you design your career within that field. Some people choose settings that give them more flexibility, while others take on more demanding roles depending on their priorities at the time.
So yes, it can be challenging at certain stages, but it is definitely possible to build a career in psychiatry while also having a family. It comes down to planning, choosing the right work environment, and being clear about what balance means to you. You don’t have to figure it all out right now, but it’s good that you’re already thinking about both your career and your life together.
Best wishes!
