Should I stay on night shift or go to day shift?

Once I start my MSN program should I stay on night shift or switch to day shift? #lovenightshift, #nursing #MSN

Dayshift! You will not be guaranteed time to work on school work and may end up exhausted, unsure what day it is and still needing to meet deadlines. I worked nightshift for 6 years and have been on days for 4 years now. I just started an online MSN program and find it is easier to use my planner to schedule our family events/appointments. I will add I choose to work weekends only. With 3 younger kids, I plan to do most of my schoolwork while 2/3 kids are at school. I am certain you will find a routine that works for you/your family. But that nightshift fatigue is a battle in itself!

Sounds like you are practicing RN on nights. I think to would depend what kind of MSN program you are studying. For example" are their clinical's in the program"? the regular MSN is lot writing papers and if you have a presentation I am sure you can schedule sleep time around this presentaion etc. Clinicals hours are during the day this may interfere with night shift hours making hard to balance sleep. The rest of MSN without clinical you can do this nights if this is what your body is accustomed to.

I cannot answer this from a nursing perspective. As a police officer, I stayed on nights for 18 years. I loved the autonomy - with no higher management around, we made our own decisions. Day shift rarely did anything without seeking managerial input. The only reason I finally went to days was because my body could no longer handle the weird hours.


However, since you are in a learning mode (correct?), you want to be exposed to all aspects of the job. I'm not sure which shift does surgery prep, but I know most of them return on day shift. That is something to think about. But, if you have 12 hour shifts, it could be that you are getting everything you need on night shift. In that case, you can simply think about your personal life and what works better for you.
