How do you know what field you truly want to study in marine science before you even make it to college?

As a high school senior, I have already become SCUBA certified and have a broad idea of what I want to do, ichthyology and conservation, but how do I know that is truly what I want to do?

Hi Matthew,

Congratulations that you are stepping to new journey - college. There are multiple ways but not limited to below that you can explore more:

You can start with popular science books or online resources about marine life/conservation with a short summary, you might on the way already, this will help you see if you enjoy the academic side of the field. You can learn about other marine science areas in parallel, then you will have more chances to see which field you really want to develop.
.
Try best to gain hands-on experience, then you will understand how marine related experts treat daily job. You can join local aquarium volunteer programs, coastal conservation projects or marine rescue centers, which will give you a taste of daily tasks; You can join a dive club or citizen science project, which will help you see if you enjoy the work or not; for sure if you have opportunity to reach out to local marine biologists or conservation workers that will be great, you will get a realistic view in this field.

You interests might be changed, that's quite common, do remember that what matters most is that your curious, passionate and willing to keep exploring. Your path will become clearer as you go.
