Becoming a child welfare social worker typically starts with earning a four-year bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field such as psychology or sociology. This includes courses in human development, psychology, social policy, child welfare, and mental health, along with field placements for real-world experience. Many roles also require a professional license after graduation, depending on your country.
In this role, you may work as a case worker, child protection officer, or family support worker in government agencies or nonprofits, supporting vulnerable children and families. When choosing a university, focus on accredited programs with strong field placements, student support, and agency connections. Early volunteering in NGOs, shelters, and child protection organizations, along with informational interviews, can help you gain clarity, and this career requires strong communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills.

You will not know for sure - and that's okay. Start from a place of interest. What interests you the most? Interest will motivate you to keep learning so that's always a good place to start. Separately, speak to your teachers, professors or anyone you may know who is working in the field you are interested in.
