What can I do kickstart jobs in my major while I am starting or currently attending college?

I am a first generation college student that will be majoring theatre. I took a gap year to save money for tuition and will probably be working throughout the school year as well. But, I have been thinking if there is a way I can tie my work into my intended major to gain as much experience and potential career opportunities as possible. That way, I can get the full college experience while also giving myself a head start into the real world with my career. Finding a place to start is where I seem to be struggling the most. Any ideas or advice is extremely helpful!

Talk to your academic advisor to see if they can help you find a campus job related to your major. Professors often need help with various tasks, so starting with your advisor is a good first step.

Congratulations on beginning college! It is great to be involved. As a theatre major, you can start and see if there are any student jobs within the theatre program. Maybe they need people for stage crew, theatre management, box office, etc, so you may be able to find an on-campus job related to your field. If not, you can see if there are any local/ regional theatres nearby and see if they're hiring. They could use some of the same roles I mentioned or even someone that assists with day of show seating, handing out programs, set load in/out and building, etc. Start within your area and also ask your professors. They might know local jobs and have contacts too of people/companies hiring within your field.

Congratulations on starting college, and you're off to a great start with your thinking and question! You can reach out to your career counseling office to inquire about internships or part-time positions to start. In addition, your professors are a great resource. They have a network of people within the field and usually keep tabs of opportunities in the industry. Utilizing your own network is underrated but is a great way to learn of new opportunities and build your career. Good luck!

Start by searching summer-stock positions available to you. There is a site Broadwayworld.com that often lists stock, regional positions and auditions, with a special section for students. I believe Playbill.com does the same. Search online for summer stock jobs, local and regional theatre companies and send resumes. I spent several years after graduation traveling all over the east coast in many different regional theatres before I landed in NYC.
It's a lot of footwork and it may involve showing up and convincing someone to give you a chance, but it never hurts to reach out to any and all sources you can find.
I have recently retired from a successful costuming career and can attest that the struggles are real, but the results are thrilling.
Good luck!
