What are the essentials for moving into a dorm for the first time?

I am a high school senior about to graduate and move away from my home. My parents are very paranoid about me moving away and what I might need. Especially since they never had this experience. I also have never lived away from my family in any capacity so this is intimidating for me. I understand there are differences in what is allowed in certain dorms but I would appreciate general advice or tips on what to look out for or avoid!

Hi Abby! I hope you are well!

I remember feeling a similar way when I was transitioning from high school to college and living in a dorm for the first time -- its a very normal feeling! I agree with the dorm roommate application/preference form, as living with someone whose habits, schedule, and lifestyle are compatible with yours is important and will help ease the transition. I also think it is helpful to check your school's housing website for what is allowed/isn't allowed in the dorms, since these rules vary per dorm. In terms of other essentials, I would say that a mattress topper and organizational bins were a few of my favorite investments! My dorm room was on the smaller side, so I had to be creative with storage, but having things organized was really helpful for me to settle in.

I hope this is helpful! I wish you all of the best as you begin your new college chapter and moving into your dorm!

When you fill out your dorm roommate application, there will likely be a preference option so you can be matched with a roommate if you need one. Be very selective as to what your preferences are. You might end up with no roommate if you are very selective in your preferences. If you do get a roommate, establish rules upfront yall with both follow and learn to clean up after yourself, splitting chores of cleaning and keep them informed if you have guests or friends stop by. Good luck, you will do well.
