What focus would best go with a business degree? I am planning on marketing but am second guessing myself. #Spring26
I am planning on pursuing a business degree with a focus on marketing. I want to make sure this is a marketable career choice- is there a better choice to focus on? What would be job opportunities with this certain degree?

If you’re second‑guessing your decision to pursue a marketing focus, it may help to pause and understand where that doubt is coming from. Is it that the program outline doesn’t genuinely interest you, or are you feeling uncertain because you haven’t yet seen how it translates into real‑world roles?
It’s worth remembering that no matter which major you choose, there are always multiple pathways you can take after graduation. Marketing, in particular, is a broad field. Within it, you could explore areas such as digital marketing, brand management, content and creative work, public relations, or marketing analytics.
Rather than focusing on whether you made the “right” choice, consider which aspects of marketing energise you the most and align best with your strengths. Your major doesn’t lock you into one outcome—it gives you a foundation from which you can shape a path that suits you.

Hi Abigail. HK is absolutely correct. Marketing covers such a vast territory. Almost every business will need marketing in some way, shape or form.
It may also help to think of what field you want to ultimately work in. Do you want to work with physical products or digital marketing? In an agency, or as an in-house marketer? A lot of business/marketing grads also end up in sales or customer experience, even research. Business with a marketing focus is a great start but don't be afraid to pivot.
You will continue to evolve in your career - where you land after college may not be where you are 20 years later.
Look into different marketing roles on Linked in to familiarize yourself with types of roles and companies available

I was a marketing major and part of my course curriculum was other business-related topics (Finance, Accounting, Management, etc.). If you decide to pursue marketing, I guarantee you will also have the opportunity to learn more about other business fields. Additionally, a marketing degree will allow you to have flexibility to explore additional areas of interest in the business world - both in your studies and as you decide on a career path.

Hi Abigail - I would take some time to learn what about Marketing you find exciting and what you would like to learn. Vs forcing a major. And also assess what may not be of interest. Fundamentally I think Business and Marketing go well together to give you a good base for several career paths. I would also reassure you that your career will evolve throughout your whole life journey. So you never need to feel stuck based on your decisions now. Keep learning, prioritizations what is valuable to you and move toward that light. And shed what doesn’t work for you.

Yes, marketing is absolutely still a marketable and viable career choice. However, the type of marketing matters. Traditional "billboard and TV ad" marketing has taken a back seat. Today, the industry is heavily driven by data, automation, and AI. If you love the psychology and creativity of marketing but want to ensure maximum marketability, you don’t necessarily need to change your major. I'd recommend a major in Marketing, but take electives, a minor, or certifications in Data Analytics, Coding, or AI Prompting.

My major was Marketing when I went to college. When I graduated, I went directly into retail then I worked as a salesman until I landed a government job in community relations. When I was in school, Marketing was my major. You can also Miner in another business topic such as business Administration or accounting. psychology was my minor Which helped me because you have to be able to read the Room or read people. Something that relates to your goals. Sociology would be good. Try to find an internship that follows your goals reach out to companies that may offer an internship.
