What things can I do to make the transition from dorm-life to renting a house easier and less intimidating?

I'm in the interview process for some part-time jobs, but the cost of everything right now is making me doubt myself. What things can I do on the side for extra cash in a college town? How do I budget for groceries and gas? Any advice about renting and living on your own would be greatly appreciate!

This is a great question, Samantha. Here are a few thoughts:
- If you are not already doing so, get roommates. This will help with expenses and potentially with workload. For example, sharing expenses for cleaning supplies, paper goods, spices, condiments, etc. will save each person money and bother for having to get their own. Also, having some common meals will be pleasant and save individuals having to cook for themselves.
- Prioritize using what you already have to eat so you reduce food waste. There are lots of free recipe sites on the internet, and it is fun to try something new.
- Try to work on-campus to save yourself extra commuting; this will save you time and money. You may even be able to get some studying done if you work at a library or archive. Or maybe you could eat for free if you work at a cafeteria or cafe during mealtimes.
- Try to focus your diet on plants as opposed to meat and dairy. Some meat and dairy is fine, of course, but this would be good for your health and budget.
- If you have the time, plan to walk instead of drive at least once per week. Again, this would be good for your health and budget.
- Before buying "dining dollars", see if just paying cash on campus might end up being cheaper.
I hope this helps and wish you good luck!
