What part of your job do you think most students underestimate or don’t realize until they’re actually in it?

I’m majoring in kinesiology but also interested in becoming a doctor.

James’s Answer

I think that people who are not physicians do not know how much administrative work is necessary to be an American doctor. Our system is very (and unnecessarily) complicated, so insurance companies, regulatory entities, and others require lots of paperwork that takes time away from actually caring for patients.
I am a pediatric intensivist, and I don't think most people can imagine the challenges of triage, of constantly trying to move patients out of the ICU in order to find a bed for the next patient waiting in the ER... The constant interruptions because so many patients, nurses, family members, consultants... all have their urgent things to say and ask at the same time you are perhaps scrubbed in trying to put in a central line...
The time one takes a history, does a physical examination, comes up with a diagnosis and treatment plan... that is what people imagine doctors are doing - but they are doing a whole lot more.
