What should I be preparing for now as a high school senior about to go into a major for elementary education/intervention specialist to prepare for being a teacher ?

Should I start gathering things such as books and classroom materials now or later in college? My family has lots of early elementary level books that they were considering getting rid of

Let me begin by saying that I am confused. You mention perhaps reading books re elementary education and then stating that members of your family have such books that they are considering getting rid of? Does that mean giving them to you? If so, in my opinion, I do not think that is the place to begin. Though if you can get the books, by all means, take them.

I would start with the individuals who work in the system. Visit elementary schools in your area, both pubic and private.. Call ahead and make an appointment. In all probability you will meet with an administrator. Have a list of pertinent questions ready. And you should have some, as you have obviously spent some time thinking about this.

With some luck, you may be able to talk to some teachers, those on the "front lines". In the end, they are the experts.

And you just may be invited to sit in on a class or two, which may present you with yet more questions.

And then carry all that on with you when you enter an institution of higher learning. And it just may be that you are ahead of many of your fellow students from day one.
