Hello, thank you for such a fun question! Time-management is very important here, as well as passion. If learning a foreign language is important to you, then it is important to carve out time to study every day. Perhaps you may learn best on your own with YouTube, podcasts, apps, books, and so forth. Or perhaps you need a personal tutor/teacher. Maybe you want to use free resources or maybe you can create a budget for your goal. When it comes to studying-abroad, language can be a barrier, but you will quickly discover how hand signs and facial expressions, not to mention technology, helps.

Learning a new language takes effort. To manage your time, set aside a designated 10-20 minutes a day to focus on that language. Perhaps you're always free at 7am. Then, from 0700-0715, you study and practice. Another tip is to listen to the language constantly, from music to TV shows. If you're short on time, a podcast while in the car can help.

After living abroad for 2 years, I find that the best teacher is immersion. That is, it is important to get out in town, talk with locals, and actively learn and try. While I love free apps, I think using a teacher has helped me the most, because they can correct me in real time. However, if I was dedicated and strict, free resources would suffice just as well. In the end, it is up to you and your learning style. Now, if you do not need to learn the language, as in it is not a requirement, do not stress! If you must learn it, research the available options, locations, and languages before making your choice.

A study abroad program is an educational arrangement that allows a college or university student to temporarily live in a foreign country while completing academic coursework that counts toward their home degree. These programs vary widely in duration—ranging from a few weeks over the summer to a full academic year—and can focus heavily on foreign language immersion, specialized field research, or general education taught in English. Beyond classroom learning, studying abroad serves as a cross-cultural transition that challenges students to build independence, navigate diverse daily environments, and manage their time globally, ultimately broadening both their personal perspective and their future career opportunities.
