Hi Deshwana - Don't worry about having a typical resume right now. If you want experience with animals, try volunteering at your local SPCA or animal shelters. They usually have a simple application instead of needing a detailed resume. Volunteering there will help you gain experience and start building a resume that shows your interest in animals.

Hi Deshawna,

It’s amazing to hear that you are working towards a dream you’ve had since childhood.

For your resume, I would recommend putting academic achievements and extracurricular activities you are part of in school.

Academic achievements examples:
- GPA
- Honor roll student
- Class rank

Extracurricular activities examples:
(bonus points if you are a leader in an activity, or it is related to animals)
- School clubs
- Student organizations
- Sports

I would also recommend volunteering at an animal shelter or shadowing a vet or animal groomer, to gain some second-hand experience with handling animals. You could also use this volunteering/shadowing experience as something to put on your resume.

I hope this helps!

Best of luck,
Everett

Hi Deshawna! For a first resume, you don’t need formal job experience yet. At your age, employers mostly want to see that you’re responsible, willing to learn, and genuinely interested in the work. You can include your school, expected graduation year, any clubs or activities, volunteer work, babysitting, pet sitting, dog walking, helping family or neighbors, and skills like communication, reliability, organization, or working well with animals. If you have good attendance or strong grades, you can include that too.

Since you want to become a groomer or vet, I’d try to build animal related experience however you can. Look into volunteering at an animal shelter, helping at adoption events, pet sitting, dog walking, or asking local grooming shops or vet offices if they have any entry level opportunities for high school students. Even if your first experience is unpaid or informal, it gives you something real to talk about on your resume and shows that you’re serious about working with animals. You can also ask a teacher, coach, volunteer supervisor, or someone you’ve helped before if they’d be willing to be a reference for you. Good luck!!

You do not need to have a job history to apply for your first job. If you have pets, helping care for them can show responsibility. You can also volunteer at an animal shelter, help with a local rescue organization, or look for opportunities at a pet store, grooming business, or veterinary clinic.

For your first job, employers will usually care about whether you are reliable, responsible, friendly, willing to learn, and able to follow instructions. Since becoming a groomer or veterinarian is your long-term goal, showing genuine interest in animal care can also make your resume stand out.

Before applying, you can ask a teacher, parent, counselor, or another trusted adult to check your resume for spelling and formatting. Keep it to one page, use a professional email address, and change the resume slightly for each animal-related position you apply for.
