Hi Bernardine,

Your career goal is amazing! To become a nephrologist, focus on science subjects like biology, chemistry, and math in high school. In college, consider majoring in biology or biochemistry to get ready for medical school. After that, you'll do an internal medicine residency and then specialize in nephrology. Working in healthcare, I've seen how early experience can be a big help. Try volunteering at a hospital or shadowing a doctor to learn more about the medical field. Keep your eyes on your goal, work hard, and always feel free to ask questions. You've got this!

Hey Bernadine!

This is such a wonderful goal! I am happy to hear that you want to be a nephrologist! This is someone who helps people stay healthy and live better lives.

The path begins right where you are now. Right now, focus on your science and math classes; things like Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and math up through Calculus. Do your best to keep your grades strong. Outside of your school work, finding opportunities to work closely with patients such as volunteering at a clinic help a lot, even small experiences help you learn and show your love for helping others.

Once you graduate from high school, the next step will be college and the good thing is you don't need an expensive college to satisfy your "pre-med" requirements. You surely don't need a fancy college to succeed either! What matters most is working hard, earning good grades, and gaining real experience for your journey! A good state school is more than enough to achieve your goals!

Just take it one step at a time, stay curious, and keep believing in yourself.
