Alecia’s Answer

It is easy to find clubs that share similar interests as you. I was in Engineering so I joined the Society of Women Engineers and The National Society of Black Engineers. I also worked on the school newspaper as I was interested in photography.  I was a Resident Assistant as it helped with my room and board expenses and taught me leadership skills.

Alecia recommends the following next steps:

Join clubs that relate to your major to expand your network.

Ogechi’s Answer

Hi Drew,

This truly depends on your major and interests. I was involved and very active with some engineering, Christian and Social organizations because these were important to me.

Maybe I should ask this - what is your major and what are your social interests?

Adelyn’s Answer

Hey Drew! So excited you are thinking about going /already going to Ohio State (my school :) ) I regret not getting involved in as much as I should have, but I have a lot of ideas if I could do it all over again. My biggest recommendation would be to get involved in something as early as possible.

Some things you can do right away/before getting on Campus:
- Try out for a club sports team (highly recommend!)
- Try to live in a more social dorm such as Lincoln or Morril (these get a bad rep but I never met anyone who didn't LOVE their time here)
- Rush a business fraternity (Many accept non-business students)

Based on your interest in engineering, I would like to plug my favorite club, the Big Data and Analytics Association. The meetings are every Tuesday and there is always free food.

If these options don't give you the social life you were hoping for, I would then highly recommend rushing a social fraternity in the spring. This also gets a bad rep, but OSU isn't an SEC school so everyone is much more relaxed in Greek Life and it is an amazing way to make a lot of friends. I would definitely be open minded to this option.
