I am a little concerned about having a roommate in college. Do the majority of schools provide the opportunity to switch if the two of you really don’t get along?

I am planning to major in culinary arts; at what college is still undecided though.

This is a very fair concern! I was so nervous before I started my first year of college because I had never had a roommate before. At my school, we fill out a "roommate agreement" form which basically asks questions that you wouldn't think about until an issue arose. For example, "What happens when one person needs to study but the other person wants to have company over." Questions like this allow for communication, compromise, and understanding between the roommates.

If, however, you and your roommate do not get along at all, there are steps that can be taken to either move into a single or to find a new roommate. I wouldn't worry about this until you have to!

Good luck and have fun!

Having a roommate is a part of college that some students love and others hate. A positive aspect of it would be that you learn to be flexible and friendly with someone who you have never met prior to living with them. A negative aspect would be that this person could drive you crazy. If you do have genuine problems with your roommate, most institutions will let you switch or move out.

Hi Gracyn -

I think this is something you could probably ask during a campus visit, or there might even be information on the school's website. The school I attended did allow people to switch roommates in certain situations. I think most schools will ask you to fill out a questionnaire as part of your enrollment that will include some basic questions to help with pairing you with a roommate (do you stay up late/wake up early? are you messy/neat? things like that). If you do have issues once paired with a roommate, you can speak with your RA (Resident Assistant) - a student that lives in the dorms with you and can be a resource for a number of things, like roommate issues. They can help you to work through issues, or make the switch if necessary. I was an RA for two years in school, and only had one situation where roommates needed to be switched - most times, things worked themselves out - but the RA is there to help you.

Hope this is helpful!
