Paul’s Answer

Hi Kylie:

Every college and university that I attended had a Foundation, which was responsible for student scholarships, which were mostly donations from private benefactors.

Many private individuals, who may have attended or have an interest in supporting education, set up these scholarships with the college or university and set specific guidelines for who can apply for them.

There are many opportunities for students in these scholarships. Many were based on a students major or classifications. I recall there were scholarships for students who were first generation in their family. This means they were the first to attend college in their family. Others were based on majors like nursing, business, engineering, liberal arts and social sciences.

When I was attended a junior college I worked par time for a law enforcement agency. It turns out there was a scholarship for individuals who intended to make law enforcement their career. I applied for the scholarship, wrote an essay on my career plans and was later notified that I had received the finances associated with the scholarship.

Many of these college foundation scholarships will have varying requirements. Some will require a certain GPA, others will require that you write an essay and tell them about your future academic and career plans. Many of the essays and scholarship applications, will actually be seen and reviewed by the benefactor, or by a scholarship committee. I actually had the privilege to sit on one of these foundation committees, and actually made selections of students who were to receive the scholarships.

So, I would look and research the college foundation option at the school were you are attending, and see if you qualify for any scholarships they have available.

Paul recommends the following next steps:

Look up your college or university foundation website
Review the scholarships available and determine of you fit into the category or designation for a scholarship and the requirements to apply for it
Apply, Apply, Apply! Write a good essay and try and submit as many applications as you can before the deadline

Scott’s Answer

I know there are several websites that have listings. One I know of is http://www.collegescholarships.org. Do not use one that wants you to pay money to apply for scholarships. They are a scam. Also do not provide your personal information unless you are redirected to the organization that is actually providing the scholarship. You also may want to ask your guidance consoler in school. When I was in school the Library also had a couple of books that listed thousands of them..
