I want to be an architect

#architect #architecture Hi, I’m Shayla, I’m in 5th grade, and I aspire to be an architect when I grow up, but I know it’s a hard job to do well with. I’d like advice on whether that’s something I should do as an occupation. A few things about me; I have really good grades, I’m an extrovert, I love math and drawing and legos, I just started getting into architecture, and I have really good long term memory. Hope this helps.

If you do think you are interested, there are camps (all of them virtual right now) that you can attend to give you more of an idea of architecture and design. Some of these programs are geared toward middle or high schoolers. I saw this one: https://www.centerforarchitecture.org/k-12/youth-family-programs/summer-programs/ and I know there are others! If you do think you are interested in architecture, try to take lots of art classes. Architecture is about the making of things through design which correlates to the making of art with digital, 2D or 3D.

Hi, Shayla,

One thing that helps anyone decide on a career path is self-knowledge, which you have! Good for you! Keep exploring.

It is typical to be interested in different things as you grow. You’re in 5th grade so expose yourself to many careers and ideas and subjects. As you take middle and high school classes you may well discover new inspiration. Or not! It’s too early to decide for sure.

Keep taking advanced math, art, physics, and drafting in high school if you can to be prepared for any technical and design-related college program. Also try new things. Extroverts thrive on being around people. This will be important for your career happiness in the future.
