Hi Chanyah! Any internship or job that involves working with kids would be valuable learning experience if you want to be a teacher. For instance, working at a daycare would allow you to plan lessons and run a classroom similarly to how you would at a school. You could also work at a summer camp to gain new teaching skills. Even babysitting would be a great place to start exercising new teaching techniques. There are lots of opportunities to work with kids that may not require as many qualifications as a public school district that will still help you gain experience. Hope this helps!

Julia’s Answer

Many internships or work opportunities would be good for a potential teacher! You can be a teacher aide or a tutor. Summer time, look into a camp counselor role.

Julia recommends the following next steps:

Know anyone who works at a school or a kids camp? Reach out to them and ask if they have any part time openings.

One option is to see if you can try out this career path as a substitute teacher, so you can get a feel for what it's like to work with students. When I was in college, I was considering working with students as a career and spoke with my hometown's education department. I got my substitute teaching license (which lasted for five years), then worked with elementary school students mainly over the summer months and used that experience as one of my internships when on break from college. Substitute teaching helped me figure out that I wanted to choose a different career path, but I really learned a lot and enjoyed my time with the students! Remember to keep in mind that there are certain requirements for substitute teaching, so it might be helpful to do some additional research to see what the qualifications are for this job in your state. Here's an example of where you can find New Jersey's requirements: https://www.nj.gov/education/educators/license/sub/handbook.pdf Hopefully this helps as an option and good luck!

Michelle recommends the following next steps:

Do some research on substitute teaching and qualifications for this job
